Top Ten Books I Enjoyed Recently (last yearish) That Weren’t My Typical Genre/Type of Book

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is our top ten books we enjoyed recently that weren’t in our normal book preference.

Cut & Run by Abigail Roux
I’ve finished the first 3 books in the series and it’s definitely not my usual genre as this was my first venture into the land of m/m romance. Really not a bad read!

Diversion by Eden Winters
Yet another m/m book that I quite enjoyed and wouldn’t have picked up if it hadn’t been recommended to me. Not only because of the genre but also because of the book’s setting. The main characters work for a narcotics bureau and it’s a kind of mystery/crime setting I haven’t previously read.

Wicked Fall by Sawyer Bennett
Yet another recommendation. This is a book tagged as BDSM and Ménage, something I haven’t really ventured into previously and it was an enjoyable read – a little different and I have to admit, less kinky than I expected, so it’s probably a nice starter for anyone wanting to venture deeper into the world of BDSM.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
I usually don’t read a lot of fiction that is (more or less) loosely based around reality, especially when it’s the reality of a war not so long ago. But I have to admit that this was a really enjoyable read. The characters were well developed and I appreciated them far more because of all their flaws.

Sins & Needles by Karina Halle
The darker side of things. Not as dark as I thought it was when I was recommended the book with a slight warning but it had its moments. I enjoyed this one a lot as it is a far cry from the often happy-go-lucky books where things rarely go wrong or are often easy to fix.

Storm Front by Jim Butcher
There isn’t much to say other than that Harry Dresden is awesome. As chaotic as he is and as much as things tend to go wrong around him, he is a great character with charm and wit. I haven’t read the entire series yet (those books that are published so far anyway) but I always have a good time when reading them. It felt like a nice step away from all the female points of view I seem to be reading lately.

The Martian by Andy Weir is not a book I would have picked up were it not for the praises of so many of my friends. Sci-Fi is one of those genres that I want to want to read but it just takes a backseat to other stuff so I never get around to it, but when I found out about the humor behind The Martian, and how it was well-written, I decided to give it a try. I call it sci-fi for those who can’t get into sci-fi, although the scientific parts are a little hard to swallow if you are not into science. I was fascinated, as I am by anyone who goes into a lot of detail about a subject with which I am unfamiliar or less knowledgeable but I felt okay with kind of skimming over some of the more difficult terminology and descriptions. If you hesitate to read the book because you are afraid of scientific subjects, I think skimming those parts will not cause you to miss out on the important parts of the story.

Book Tiger:

I would second the Cut & Run series. I was so curious, having seen a load of people reading it, that I had to give it a try. I don’t know if any of you remember, but I didn’t even know what M/M meant halfway through last year! I’m now halfway through the second book in the series and its great.

Halfway through last year as well I had never read a paranormal book and never thought I would. Imagine what I would have missed out on! So I suppose that when I started with First Grave on the Right it was so far out of my comfort zone it was totally beyond my radar. Thank you, MMP – I haven’t looked back!

I was urged to read Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs – it is YA a genre I like but is also under the dreaded horror tag!

Cue spooky X-Files music.

So I borrowed it from the library as I was SO sure I was going to hate it!

Well- I loved it! Here’s my review.

I have read the second one Hollow City – loved it too!

I have the last one Library of Souls ready to read – but it is a double edged sword – I so much want to read it – but when I read it, then the series will be over 😦

And then…

Just finished Library of Souls – was a good ending – love it when a series doesn’t run out of puff at the end like so many of them seem to do.
